Testosterone is not just for men. Women need testosterone too!
Did you know that many women become deficient in testosterone during/after menopause?
It’s true. The reason is that the ovaries produce the majority of testosterone in cycling women. When the ovaries stop producing estrogen/progesterone in menopause, they also STOP producing testosterone. The body is then reliant on other pathways to produce testosterone that are often not adequate.
So what’s the big deal?
Here are some symptoms testosterone deficient women struggle with:
- Weight gain
- Loss of muscle
- Loss of libido
- Fatigue
- Poor sleep
- Anxiety and depression
- Vaginal dryness
- Decreased motivation
- Decreased ability to heal
Not so great right!!?
So how do you treat this?
As a naturopathic doctor, I take the patient’s entire health history into account. Diet and lifestyle must be analyzed closely in order to optimize hormones. On top of this, I often prescribe hormone replacement therapy for my menopausal/postmenopausal patients in order to get them back feeling like they did in their twenties.
My top 3 things that I adjust with my patients:
- Eliminate food intolerances
- Add testosterone producing foods to diet
- Move your body! Lifts weights! You cannot make adequate testosterone otherwise.
Recommended Foods to Boost T (Organic please)
- Beef
- Beans
- Oysters/shellfish
- Egg yolks
- Tuna
Recommended Supplements (Talk to your doctor 1st)
